SHARP SH06-D NERV edition Partial DISASSEMBLY !!

After being for 3 months with this marvelous phone, the SHARP SH06-D NERV edition and dealing a bit with the screen problems reported on my previous post, it seems that the screen did had a factory problem and it needs to be replaced/fixed back on Japan. The mobile still works fine, however the screen goes black from time to time and there is no way to bring it back to life but by taking the battery out for a couple of hours and then reinserting it.

Sooo... I decided that, since this mobile is to go back to Japan for fixing, then I had the chance to rip it open before it does. Here is a partial disassembly guide, for those hardware fans and any person curious about what might be inside. I mention it is a partial one, since I did not disassembled it completely, just took apart the back cover, but did not went all the way into taking all sections apart. That because the mobile still works and I do not want to have any kind of reclaim about violating warranty labels or those pesky "orange single-use scotch tapes" used to fix some parts together.

First problem: The screws.

This are the screws this mobile has. I thought it was a kind of TORX screw, yet it turned out to be another kind. TORX is not a suitable screwdriver to use with this screw. After searching for a few, I did not find any kind of name or sample on the internet, so I decided to try to open them with a flat (slotted) screwdriver. Fortunatelly, the slotted 1.5mm screwdriver made it !!

You have to remove 7 of them, as shown below.

This are the screws once removed. Notice that only 3 out of 7 total screws have a small plastic washer. This is because since the mobile is water and dust proof, it should provide the best protection available. This way, water and dust shall not pass through that easy.

Once removed, you can use a plastic card (credit, debit, phone, etc) or a plastic spudger to pry open the external case.

This is the case once opened. The red rubber protection is all around the phone to provide maximum anti dust and water proof protection.

And that is for today. Looks like a very good and decent assembly, modular construction with a very solid and precise fabrication. It is also a delight viewing it =)

SHARP SH06-D NERV edition FULL PERFORMANCE REVIEW !!!

This is a new japanese acquisition: the all famous NERV SH-06D phone!

This phone is a japanese SHARP brand phone, based on the SH-06D Aquos model. In short, this is an HD 3D capable screen phone that looks AWESOME. The NERV edition was limited to only 30 000 units that were almost sold out as it was released. Fortunately, the EVANGELION stores had kept some and are still available for sell.

For the hardware guys, here are the specs:

The original OS installed on this device is Android 2.3, however the OS can be upgraded to 4.0, and it does contains all the customizations and cool stuff loaded on the 2.3 version.

You can google a lot for pictures and some small reviews, yet on any western language, most of them are pretty outdated (way before the release of the mobile, or just about the release date, back on 2012), as well as a lot of UNBOXING videos showing the contents and initial startup sequences of this cool device, so I shall not waste your reading time on that, but rather focus on the post-buy experiences and performance of the phone.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Being past owner of a Samsung Galaxy SII and being used to great design lines, perfect fit parts and great appearance, the SH-06D NERV is AWESOME. Physically it feels damn light compared to most of the mobile phones available on the Americas region. Despite of being so light (just 145g) the feeling is pretty solid. After the initial assembly, that is, inserting the MicroSD card, SIM and battery in place and fitting the cool back cover, there is no "cheap construction" feeling. Everything fits perfectly on its place, giving it a very solid sensation.

The hardware buttons are great, both in design and feel. Having a HOME, MENU and BACK buttons is handy. This works the same for the POWER and VOLUME buttons.

Talking about the great MAGI UI, it is simply mind-blowing. All the customized icons are gorgeous to the eye, and having almost all of them a cool functionality, makes them a great choice for a home screen.

When testing, and actually get to know, the whole bunch of japanese apps this phone is loaded with, I noticed that most of them work only on Japan. This is because most of them are bonded with the DOCOMO SIM. The NOTTV is not, however it is a satellite broadcast that is also only available in Japan, so unfortunately, the cool NERV ONLY antenna is just a cool accessory on this side of the Pacific.

Another super cool feature is that you can control the color of the small LED located on the top right corner of the phone. This can be set on the SOUND settings (odd isn't it, being a display feature LOL), you can choose a blinking pattern and a color for this light for incoming calls or messages !

Perhaps one of the most impressive details of this model is that it DOES is dust and water proof. The only visible connectors it has are the dock contacts located on the left. The other available contact is the Micro USB connector, located on the top of the device. However, it is concealed by a rubber cover, which works for the anti-dust anti-water protection.

This protection can be seen as well when assembling the phone. The back cover of the device has also a rubber protection around the battery compartment to provide full dust and water isolation.

Hands On: PERFORMANCE

Just before the great first impressions, comes the not-so-impressive ones. Beware, this are just some opinions and personal tests I found while using this great phone. If you are planning on buying this AWESOME mobile phone, STILL DO regardless of this review. It is intended just to point out some features that are not available outside Japan and some curious behaviors of the hardware. The concepts EVANGELION PHONE, JAPANESE PHONE, LIMITED EDITION and the famous SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY are totally worth it !!


Overall, the 4.0 ICS is pretty stable. This heavily EVANGELION customized version is amazing! HOWEVER, there are some details that I noticed upon usage:

SCREEN

The great Mobile ASV Aquos 4.5" LCD screen looks GORGEOUS! Displaying HD in 720p (720 x 1280 pixels) it contains a very high pixel density, 329ppi, so almost ANY image displayed here shall look impressive. And it has the great plus of being 3D display capable. This might not be the first device having it, however it does is one of the first to include it with 720p resolution.

The bad: None so far ! After having this great device for about 2 months, the screen is totally impressive. There is only one small detail I noticed with my mobile, it has one stuck pixel. Dunno if it is a factory problem or if it happened when it was shipped overseas, but I need to get it unstuck somehow.

BATTERY

Having a 1520mAh battery for a dual 1.2Ghz processor is a bit underpowered. Taking in consideration that it is supporting also a 720p 3D screen, makes it look even worse. But fear not (much), the battery does works as expected, yet it does run a bit low on capacity. Having the MAGI home does drains a lot of power, since most of the widgets are mostly indicators (Battery, CPU, RAM, Memory, Weather, Location, Time, EVA news, Signal level), they take a big toll on power draining. It can give you a full day work on normal usage and lots of standby time, but you did not bought this phone to let it on stand by, do you?
If you are playing the "Attack of the 8th Angel" or viewing lots of videos,  surfing on the internet, updating whatever app you have downloaded on your phone, or playing any visual intensive game, your battery shall suffer and you can get like 6 hrs of continuous fun, tops.

APPLICATIONS

This mobile gets loaded with tons of japanese apps, but alas, almost all of them do work only on Japan =( The NOTTV app is worthless on the Americas, so it is safe to uninstall it (if you want of course).
One of the best apps is the 3D capable picture viewer. This small app can convert your regular 2D JPGs (yes, only JPGs, PNGs and other formats do not work, so you have to convert them, and you can with the included photo editor !) into great 3D images that look incredible on this phone. I have not been able to test the 3D images on another device, but I assume they are looking great. The 3D conversion is done by making 2 files of the original, one JPG and one MPO file, that once read with a 3D capable program, make the 3D image possible.

The not good: Unfortunately, this gorgeous phone is coupled with just 1Gb RAM, which makes is a bit underpowered for today's apps, so from once in a while your apps will crash on you. It is very rare, but it does happens.
Some apps tend to use a lot of RAM and a lot of CPU. IF you are using the MAGI home (the one with all the EVA apps), almost any app you run will have some troubles. The phone will become sluggish and, as said before, apps might crash. If you use the regular HOME app, you shall free a lot of RAM and CPU time, so apps shall run a lot better, BUT you will not be having the AWESOME MAGI home !!!! Hard decision to make LOL.

CONNECTIVITY

SH06D NERV comes bundled with EVERYTHING you need to get connected nowadays, except for one very recent share protocol that requires some hardware. It has:

• WI-FI: Full 802.11 B/G/N support, teetering and Wi-Fi direct.
• Bluetooth: 3.0 version
• INFRARED: Yes, it does has Infrared bundled !! It is pretty outdated this days, that is true, but worths having it.
• GPS: Works pretty good with almost any GPS app. I have tried it with Ndrive and works great. Lock times are not that high and accuracy is pretty good.
• MicroUSB: 2.0 version, can connect it to your computer and provides various connectivity protocols, although I have used only one:
• MTP mode
• PTP mode
• Card Reader mode: This might be the most used of all, as it allows you to mount your MicroSD card on your PC or MAC.
• Fast Transfer Mode
• MediaJet Install

The bad touch: It has a strange connectivity protocol called iC communication. As far as I got, this is a somehow similar to NFC (Near Field Communication) protocol used only in Japan (another japan only feature). The recent protocol I talked about previously is this NFC capability, it is not included and it is not compatible with the iC communication.

The other bad thing on connectivity is that being a Dust-Water proof mobile, it only has the MicroUSB connector on the top, and that's it. This means that you do not get any 3.5mm mini plug for earphones, but through an USB adapter (included on the box of course). Also, if you need to charge your phone, you can charge it via the MicroUSB cable, OR via the docking cradle. Unfortunately, the cradle does not have an USB port, but rather a FOMA connector. This is a very common power adapter connector on Japan, but it is nearly 99% unknown on the Americas, meaning that you should consider buying the FOMA AC or DC adapter, otherwise you will be stuck at charging your phone via computer USB cable, action that can make the MicroUSB connector rubber cover to become weak over time.

CAMERA

This might be the camera software with the most options available I have every used. It DOES has a lot of options, ranging from the regular exposure, white balance, ISO levels and predefined scenes, to D-Range correction, shake control, shutter settings, 3D camera switch, fish eye option among others.

One of the cool things on the camera is that, even having only 1 lens, it is able to take 3D pictures by using a small trick, in which the software allows you to take one picture, then you need to move the phone slightly to your right, and it takes a second picture. This conforms afterwards the 3D image. You need to practice a bit on taking this pics, but the results are pretty good.

Another cool feature is the Rapid Shooting option. This is mostly the fastest one I have tested: it is able to take up to 50 photos in about 1.5 secs. Then it allows you to review all the shoots and you can pic which ones to save.

The bad: Despite being an 8Mp camera, the sensor is not that good. The pictures tend to get blurry a lot and it does not takes very well the white balance on low light conditions. When taking photos / video on daylight or outdoors, the quality is great, but indoors or low light, the pics are not that good. Also, the flash is very hard to manage, as it only has a "Mobile light" control, which should be working as a flash, but takes some time to get used to it.

FRONT CAMERA

Being a 0.3 Mp camera, it just does the job. Nothing impressive about it, it can be used for video conferencing with no troubles. Yet, when I tested it with Skype with a Nokia Lumia 920, the difference was HUMUNGOUS. I had some trouble getting the video signal from the front camera on the NERV phone right, but after the 2nd attempt, it went well. The quality was not that good, but for a regular quality video call is OK.

SOUND

The sound quality on this great phone is just average. The loudspeaker and the earpiece sound very much alike, like an old radio. Curiously, the earpiece can be heard very loud, making it to think that the loudspeaker was on; at least happened to me a couple of times already during a call. The overall volume of the loudspeaker is average, with also an average quality.

The sad part: The earpiece sounds pretty cheap. Unfortunately being a phone built mostly of plastic, the soul quality of the earpiece is way underrated for such a great phone. It sounds like a walkie talkie. Whatever sound it comes from it is very understandable, however it simply sounds cheap.

Another detail, might not be a sound issue, but rather an application or processor/memory problem, is this: When using the Media Player application (or the MAGI audio player), any MP3 that you play tends to "click" and becomes interrupted for a fraction of a second. This happens if you are using the loudspeaker to reproduce your favorite song, or if you are using the USB to Miniplug accessory to connect headphones or loudspeakers. I have not been able to determine what might be causing this problem, but after a while, it gets annoying.

Screen update

After using the phone for a while, I noticed a strange behaviour with the screen: It turns completelly black for about an hour or so, leaving you with no way to access anything on the phone.
This happened to me 2 times already and this is the process:

• The moblie goes into stand by (either by pressing the power button or by timeout) in a normal way.
• When trying to resume from standby, either by pressing the home button or the power button, the screen is black, but you can see that it is still turned on, since you are able to see the white glow on the edges of the screen.

• Pressing the power button or home buttons does nothing.
• After a couple of seconds, the screen does turns off. This can be noticed because the white glow dissapears and the screen goes totally black.
• The hardware buttons are still on, everytime you press them, the light behind them turns on, this means that the phone is still on, but the screen goes off.

• The touchscreen is still functional and the mobile can be rebooted, however even after soft reboot, the screen is still completely off.
• Taking the battery out and leaving the phone off for up to 30 mins does nothing at all. When reinserting the battery and turning on the mobile, the hardware buttons turn on, BUT the screen does not comes up. The touchscreen still works though.
• After leaving the phone with the battery out for about 6 hrs or so (I left it overnight), and then reinserting everything in place, the phone finally turns on ! Heart goes back to normal beating LOL !

I really have no clue on what might be causing this problem, but I think it might be related to:

• Lots of apps open at once.
• One app that takes up lots of screen time and upon resuming something goes wrong.
• A problem with the screen controller (might be hardware related).
• Factory problem with the screen.
• 1 or several spirits the phone acquired while being shipped LOL.

It has not happened again, and I really expect not to happen again, it really feels like a small cardiac arrest!

Small update.

After a few days of this review, I got another screen problem: When taking the phone out of standby in normal operation, my screen went totally PURPLE. All colors were in purple hue, that is background, icons, everything. Even the lock screen was showing purple colors !!

Then, I simply turned the screen off (sent the mobile to stand by mode) and waking it up again and screen went back to normal.

I had to contact the seller to inform about this problem, and after sending him this review, it turned out that the mobile needed to be fixed, so I shall be sending this beauty back to Japan for warranty. Fortunately warranty is still in place till 2015 as per DOCOMO site, so it is a good support time still.


Overall, it is a bit old mobile, yet the heavy customization both on software and hardware really worth having it. If you can get one, do not think about it, just go get it !!

Mejora de Señal GPS para Nokia N95 8Gb

Recientemente he adquirido un telefono Nokia N95 de 8Gb. Es realmente una preciosidad de telefono, tiene cuanta cosa no se imaginan. Pueden buscar en Google especificaciones y notas al respecto (jojojo)
La principal razon para adquirir este telefono fue que trae su propio chip GPS integrado. Este, en conjunto con los Nokia Maps v2.0 es bastante util para cuando uno viaja. Sin embargo, la recepcion que tiene el telefono "de fabrica" realmente es deplorable. En el manual del telefono mencionan que hay que "abrir" el telefono (esto es, deslizarlo para que se vea el teclado) para lograr la mejor recepcion posible, dado que el chip GPS se encuentra justo debajo del teclado.
Basado en ESTE LINK, he abierto (o desensablado) mi telefono y le he hecho una modificacion sustancial a la recepcion de señal de GPS.

NOTA: Este procedimiento ANULA la garantia del telefono. No soy responsable por ningun tipo de daño causado a su aparato por mal seguimiento del instructivo o desconocimiento de cualquiera de los procesos mencionados. La informacion se distribuye "como es", sin responsabilidad alguna. El seguir este manual es responsabilidad del usuario.

Muy a grosso modo, consiste en reemplazar la antena GPS que tiene el telefono de fabrica por un alambre, mas largo, que permita una mejor recepcion de la señal. Comenzemos.

Herramientas Necesarias:

• Desarmador Torx T5
• Cautin tipo Lápiz
• Soldadura
  
• 10 a 20 cm de Alambre delgado (funciona bien un trozo de alambre de un cable de red Cat5 cualquiera) o 10 a 20cm de Alambre Plano

Instrucciones:

1. Para abrir el telefono, hay que deslizarlo hacia arriba para que se vea el teclado. Toda la parte trasera es una sola pieza de plastico suave. Hay que hacer presion hacia afuerta en la union del lado izquierdo del teclado. Con cuidado, se desprendera esa seccion. Con los dedos es fácil terminar de sacar la pieza completa.
2. Una vez que retirada la tapa trasera, quitar los 4 tornillos plateados con el T5.
3. 
4. Al quitar los tornillos de la parte superior, hay que remover la "tapa" del telefono. Es donde se encuentra el boton de Encendido.
5. 
6. Abrir con cuidado el telefono. Estos tornillos sujetan la parte frontal del telefono (la pantalla y teclado plateado). Hay que desprender con mucho cuidado el conector que une ambas partes.
7. 
8. Aqui la toma de la pantalla sola.
9. 
10. Remover el teclado del telefono. Este no se encuentra atornillado ni pegado, solamente esta sobrepuesto, basta con ejercer un poco de presion hacia arriba para que salga sin problemas.
11. 
12. Una vez que se quita el teclado, hay que quitar los dos tornillos negros con el T5
13. 
14. Al quitar los tornillos, se libera la tapa inferior del telefono. Aqui se ve la antena original del GPS (ese hilo verde). No es necesario remover esta antena, pues no estorba despues de hacer la modificacion.
    
15. 
16. Para poder liberar completamente la tarjeta principal del telefono, hay que desconectar la camara. Basta con hacer un poco de fuerza hacia afuera y se liberara sin problemas.
17. 
18. Ya con la tarjeta principal libre, hay que soldar el alambre en el punto señalado. Debe de hacerse con mucho cuidado para no dañar ningun componente de la tarjeta. Sugiero se estañe primero la punta del alambre y despues se solde a la tarjeta principal. Aqui yo decidi utilizar un alambre plano, pues es mas discreto y menos estorboso que un alambre redondo. Esto se nota al momento de cerrar el telefono. Con un alambre redondo hay que tener mucha paciencia para acomodarlo de modo que el telefono cierre bien.

20. Ahora hay que acomodar el alambre para que no estorbe al volver a cerrar el telefono. Aqui las fotos de por donde pase yo el alambre.

23. Finalmente, hay que colocar las piezas de regreso. Aqui se ve como queda ya el telefono con la tapa de abajo colocada en su lugar.
24. 
25. Y seguir los pasos en reversa para re-ensamblar el telefono. Hay que tener cuidado al colocar los conectores de la camara y la pantalla de regreso, requieren poca fuerza para que queden en su lugar.
26. Finalmente, al momento de colocar la tapa trasera, verifiquen que no quede muy "gorda" y que cierre bien.
27. Una vez cerrado, coloquen de regreso la bateria y su chip, enciendan el telefono y prueben el GPS. Esta foto la tome poco despues de haber hecho la modificacion:

29. En esta ocasion, hacer el "lock" de los satelites le tomo aprox. 1 minuto, estando dentro de mi casa y con el celular cerca de una ventana. Al hacerlo al aire libre y con vista al cielo, debe de tardarse un poco menos. La recepcion realmente se incremento y el tiempo que toma asegurar los satelites es menor. Aun asi, hay que seguir "abriendo" el telefono para que la recepcion de la señal sea lo mas clara y fuerte posible.

Backup de iconos del Messenger para Mac - emoticons

Alguna ocasion he tenido que desinstalar y volver a instalar el Messenger en mi computadora Macintosh, con la sorpresa de perder todos los emoticons. Es una buena monserga tener que estar pidiendolos de regreso a todos tus contactos, asi que he aqui un buen tip para poder respaldarlos y restaurarlos.

1 - Teniendo el Messenger funcionando correctamente, los emoticons se guardan en la siguiente carpeta:
/Users/YourUser/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Microsoft Messenger Data/

2 - Copiar toda la carpeta para hacer un respaldo.

3 - En caso de requerir reinstalar el Messenger, bastara con restaurar la carpeta que copiamos en el paso anterior. Si se instala una nueva version del Messenger, hay que reemplazar la carpeta original por la que copiamos anteriormente.

Esta carpeta contiene tanto los emoticons que usamos cuando escribimos como las imagenes del perfil de tu cuenta. Al restarurar la carpeta, todos seguiran ahi sin necesidad de buscarlos y agregarlos uno por uno otra vez !

Abriendo la MAC

A inicios de Abril se murio el disco duro de mi computadora, una Power Book G4 de 15". He de decir que siendo mi medio basico para comunicacion/entretenimiento/weba y similares, se sintio muy feo.
Y poniendo en practica las ganas de desarmar y armar cosas, le cambie el disco duro por uno nuevo. Uno diria que es algo dificil, pero realmente no lo es, es bastante facil y solo requiere unas cuantas herramientas y algo de paciencia.

Les anexo un link (ya tambien en la seccion de LINKS) donde pueden encontrar manuales de algunas computadoras Macintosh, explica bastante bien como armar y desarmar algunos modelos de computadoras en especifico, asi como de algunos modelos de IPOD. He de decir que me ayudaron bastante al momento de reemplazar el disco duro de mi computadora.

Les anexo algunas fotos de las tripas de mi mac.

Estas son todas las tripas de la mac, con la tapa donde esta el teclado y el mouse levantada. Es un reverendo rollo quitar esta tapa, pues hay que remover alrededor de 20 tornillos, y ya despues de que esta libre, hay que jugar un poco con algunos seguros internos. Realmente no es dificl hacer el desarme de la computadora, es bastante sencillo y se requiere un poco de paciencia. Los manuales vienen los suficientemente explicados como para decir tambien que tipo de herramientas se requieren. La mayoria de las veces se tienen en casa, como son desarmadores, clips, pinzas o algun otro aditamento facil de conseguir en cualquier ferreteria.



Este es el lado izquierdo de la mac. Al parecer el ventilador del lado izquierdo tambien se daño, asi que hubo que removerlo e ir a conseguir la pieza. La ingratisima salio en $650.00 pesos !!! En una MACSTORE localizada en el Centro, cerca de la plaza de la computacion, me vendian la pieza, ya instalada, por la modica cantidad de $900.00. ESO ES UN ASALTO !!!!



Y he aqui el zoom del disco duro. Este es el disco nuevo. Originalmente traia de fabrica un disco de 60Gb, sin embargo, ya no consigo discos duros para laptop de esa capacidad,asi que decidi comprar uno del doble: 120Gb. Nada mal ^_^. Esta pieza costo $900.00. No se me ocurrio preguntar en la MACSTORE cuanto me salia que comprara el disco duro con ellos y se lo instalaran, pero seguramente una cantidad bastante alta por algo que uno mismo puede hacer.



Finalmente la computadora ya esta viva de nuevo y funcionando a la perfeccion. ^_^

De verdad, los invito a que busquen manuales, busquen informacion sobre algo que quieran reparar, vean que tan dificil seria que ustedes lo hagan, busquen en foros en internet las experiencias de que tan dificil les fue a otras personas hacer esa reparacion y que posibilidades hay de realmente hacerlo uno mismo. Algo muy muy cierto es que cuando llevamos cualquier cosa a reparacion, lo que nos cobran no es realmente las piezas, sino la mano de obra. Uno cobra no por lo que hace, sino por lo que sabe!!

Compaq Presario ARCAICA !!!

En esta ocasion les traigo una historia sobre mi computadora literalmente ARCAICA.

Resulta ser una poderosisima COMPAQ Presario modelo 433SX.

Las especificaciones de Fabrica eran:

Procesador: 486 @ 33Mhz.

Empezare por lo mas importante: el modelo.

Los numeros 433SX se refieren a: Un procesador 486 que corre a 33 Mhz. No, no son 333 Mhz, sino tal cual 33 Mhz !!!! Para su tiempo, esa velocidad era suficiente para correr casi lo que fuera. Sin embargo, el procesador lee las letras SX. Esto quiere decir que era un procesador que no traia integrado algo llamado "coprocesador numerico". Este se encargaba de realizar las operaciones de alto nivel con punto flotante. En cristiano, el procesador le faltaba un "pedazo", lo que lo hacia muy lento.

La Memoria RAM es realmente algo de consideracion. Esta computadora traia ya integrados en la tarjeta madre 4Mb, con posibilidades de expansion de dos ranuras SIMM. Posteriormente le compraria estas expansiones, mas adelante les explico que sucedio con esto.

El Disco Duro realmente era GRANDE para esa epoca, tomando en cuenta que el Windows 3.11 tomaba aprox. unos 20 Mb en instalacion, asi que tenias una cantidad ridiculamente grande para almacenar todo lo demas que quisieras !!

La pantalla es de 14", a color, con soporte de hasta 256 colores en 800x600. Todo un logro para una computadora de 1992 !!

Los puertos, curiosamente esta computadora traia integrados de fabrica un puerto para Joystick (que normalmente venian integrados solo en las tarjetas de sonido) y un modem. Sin embargo, el modem era algo realmente lento, corriendo a 2.2kbps (tomando en cuenta que el estandar ahora es de 56kbps !!) En alguna ocasion lo llegue a probar, pero simplemente no era funcional ya, a pesar de que la comunicacion si se establecia.

Esa computadora la compre y decidi instalarle Windows 95 (la compu la compre en el 96). Para mi sorpresa, Windows 95 corrio sin problemas !! (dado tambien mi Amplisimo conocimiento en computadoras para ese entonces jajajajaja).

Un tiempo mas adelante, decidi incurrir mas en el campo de las computadoras y se me ocurrio empezarle a hacer actualizaciones a la computadora, esta es la historia:

- Comprar una tarjeta de sonido. No podia tener una computadora en casa que no pudiese tocar los sonidos de los juegos que le conseguia !! Una poderosa tarjeta ISA marca PRO-AUDIO SPECTRUM con un poderoso CD-ROM externo fue la compra ideal. Me habia llevado un 2x1, pues ya tenia tarjeta de sonido (una excelente para su tiempo) y ademas el soporte multimedia para la computadora, un CD-ROM externo !!! Estos dos elementos hasta la fecha estan en la maquina instalados !

- Comprar mas memoria. Era obvio que un Windows 3.11 no necesitaba cantidades grandes de memoria RAM, pero al momento de cambiar hacia un ambiente grafico de Windows 95, la memoria se habia vuelto algo VITAL ! Una vuelta por la plaza de la computacion me llevo al mundo de la investigacion sobre memorias RAM. Resulta que habia 2 tipos de memoria SIMM, las que tenian PARIDAD y la que no. Las memorias con PARIDAD deben de comprarse, como su nombre lo indica, en pares. Si pones una memoria de ese tipo solita, la compu no la reconoce !! Mi compu segun solo soportaba las que no tienen paridad, asi que compramos un par de memorias de diferente capacidad. La compu las reconocio, pero no se noto el rendimiento realmente bueno de Windows. Asi que decidi comprar un par de memorias iguales de la misma capacidad. Para mi sorpresa, el rendimiento se fue como un 100% mas !! Finalmente, la memoria RAM total quedo de 20 Mb, dos modulos de 8Mb c/u, mas los 4 Mb integrados.

- Cambio del procesador. Esto si fue toda una odisea. Inicialmente la compu traeria un procesador 486 a 33Mhz, pero resulta que se le podia cambiar fisicamente por uno mas rapido. La teoria decia que podia duplicar facilmente ese valor, asi que busque un procesador 486 @ 66Mhz, un poderoso Intel DX2.
Mas adelante, no fueron suficiente 66 Mhz, asi que decidi buscar algo mas poderoso. Supuestamente exisitia un procesador que duplicaba al DX2: el DX4 a 100Mhz. Se escuchaba muy bien esa opcion y empece a buscarlo. Durante aprox. 6 meses busque el mentado procesador pero con poco exito. Finalmente en una tienda de chacharas viejas aparecio el fabuloso procesador, un Texas instruments DX4. Sin embargo, la decepcion fue mayuscula cuando intente probarlo. La computadora era lo bastante payasa para aceptar un procesador que no fuese INTEL o AMD, asi que el Texas no dio el ancho. Finalmente aparecio el famoso DX4 de Intel y OH MARAVILLA, el rendimiento de la computadora una vez mas se fue como al 100% arriba, permitiendome instalarle un sistema nuevo, el Windows 98 !!
Ya mas adelante, me llegarian rumores de que existia un procesador todavia mas rapido, un AMD DX4 a 133 Mhz. Parecia que ese procesador existia en el mercado, pero era muy dificil de conseguir. Incluso llegue a preguntar directamente a AMD si aun contaban con alguno en existencia que pudiesen vender, pero ya no se fabricaban esos procesadores y no habia en stock, asi que solo dependia de algun local donde vendieran cosas legacy. Durante unos 2 a;os estuve buscando ese mitico procesador, hasta que un dia en un local de la plaza de la computacion aparecio. Era el unico que existia y no tenia idea de donde lo habian sacado ni de si funcionaba o no, pero yo lo compre al ridiculo precio de $25 pesos !!!! Toda una ganga !!! Afortunadamente el procesador funciono y si se noto todavia un buen incremento del rendimiento de la maquina. Este fue el ultimo nivel a que podia llegar la computadora, pues de ahi en adelante, solo habia ya procesadores 586, mejor conocidos como Pentium, pero el tama;o del procesador fisicamente era mayor y no le quedaba a la computadora.

- Compra de un Modem. Como toda persona interesada en el internet, fue necesario conseguir un modem para poder llegar a tener por lo menos un correo electronico, asi que logre conseguir un modem externo por cable serial. El aparatito resulto ser compatible incluso con LINUX y funciono muy bien. Fue literalmente la puerta de entrada hacia el internet.

- Compra de un Disco Duro. Conforme avanzaba la tecnologia, tambien era necesario avanzar el espacio disponible para guardar juegos y chacharas en la computadora, sobre todo teniendo acceso al internet ! Teoricamente, la compu soportaba por BIOS discos duros de hasta 2 Gb, sin embargo, las configuraciones decian que se podia tener un disco duro todavia mas grande. Decidi probar con un disco inicial de 1Gb. No hubo problemas para levantarlo, asi que despues probariamos con un disco de 4Gb. La maquina lo acepto sin problemas, pero no estaba dispuesta a aceptar mayor capacidad, asi que habia tocado el ultimo limite de la compu.

Finalmente, la compu quedo asi:

Procesador: AMD 486 @ 133Mhz.
Memoria RAM: 20 Mb
Disco Duro: 4 Gb
Pantalla Integrada al CPU con resolucion VGA de 800x600, 512Kb de memoria de Video.
Puertos: 1x Serial, 1x Paralelo, 1x Joystick, Mouse y Teclado PS2 (Minidin).
Comunicaciones: Modem Integrado Compaq de 2200 bps + Modem Externo 33.6Kbps
Sistema Operativo: Windows 98
CD-Rom externo
Tarjeta de sonido 16 bit

Programando para la MAC

Bueno, estos dias he tenido un poco de tiempo libre, digamos que vacaciones a fuerza por cuestion de una "probable salmonelosis" que me detectaron.
Pero utilizando ese tiempo, me he dedicado un poco a ver si es posible hacer programas para la MAC, y resulta que si se puede, un usuario mortal con un poco de conocimiento de programacion previa (como la que nos dieron a todos en ingenieria, programacion en C o en Ensamblador) podriamos hacer uso de las herramientas de desarrollo de MAC para poder meterle un poco de coco y hacer algunos pininos en este ambiente.

Me he encontrado un libro muy bueno, titulado MACOS X PROGRAMMING [NEW RIDERS] que trae una muy buena coleccion de tecnicas, mucha informacion acerca de como funciona, a modo muy basico, el MACOS X, y los lenguajes y utlidades que sirven para poder programar en la MAC. Me lo pude conseguir en formato PDF, poderosas 300+ paginas de harta informacion, asi que veremos como funciona esto.

Una forma sencilla de programar y hacer algunas tareas repetitivas en la MAC es el AUTOMATOR. Este programita viene incluido en el MacOS 10.4 Tiger.
Es bastante sencillo de usar, pues puedes hacer rutinas como en diagrama de flujo. La interfaz es muy facil de utilizar y de aprender, ademas de que viene como con TEMPLATES para poder realizar los miniprogramas facilmente. Trae tambien algunos ejemplos. Bastante buen inicio.
Por ejemplo, yo he hecho algunos "automators" para seleccionar un archivo de imagen, darle click derecho (o Ctrl-Click) para que salga el menu secundario y poder ponerla como papel tapiz, asi, en el instante.
Otra muy buena es la de renombrar un grupo de archivos.
Otra para convertir una imagen a JPG.

Todo esto, sin necesidad de abrir el archivo en cuestion, todo sucede "tras bambalinas" !!
Echenle un ojo, esta bueno y facil de usar.

Y ya finalmente, como siempre publico alguna imagen cuando hago un post, pos ahi va la del dia de hoy, para recrear la pupila un poco.

El interior de una MAC

Esta imagen si esta muy muy MUY buena. Es una Radiografia de una laptop MAC. Presumo que es de un modelo anterior al 2005, pues tiene todos los conectores en la parte de atras de la computadora (hasta arriba en la foto).
Es interesante, ahora si que se le ve TODO !

Empezando por el lado inferior derecho, la unidad de CD, a la izquierda, la unidad del disco duro, y a la orilla derecha, la bateria, compuesta de varias celdas.
Justo arriba de las baterias, las entradas de tarjetas PCMCIA, y arriba a la izquierda, un pequeño ventilador.
Son apreciables en toda la parte superior las bisagras de la pantalla, una a cada extremo de la Mac.
Un poco a la derecha de las PCMCIA, esta el procesador, seguramente un poderoso PPC, identificable por la pequeña barra metalica que sale desde el procesador hacia la derecha, para ayudar a la disipacion del calor.
Arriba, un conector que parece ser un VGA, luego otro ventilador, despues un par de puertos USB y el puerto de Red.
Finalmente OTRO ventilador en la orilla derecha, arriba de la unidad de CD.

Soporte Tecnico ?

- Usan sistema de tickets para cada problema que se les presente para resolver.
- Las respuestas son de gente que si sabe !
- Basta con un registro (gratuito, no te llenan el mail de spam o anuncios todo el tiempo) para tener acceso a la parte de preguntas y respuestas.
- Manejan un foro completo de soporte tecnico.
- Manejan tambien un BLOG !
- Las respuestas se dan de acuerdo al perfil con el que te registraste, no te van a poner respuestas totalmente tecnicas si tu perfil es de un newbie, o te pueden poner santo y seña si en tu perfil dices que eres todo un guru de las computadoras !

En general es un sitio bastante bueno, con el foro de discusiones y preguntas y respuestas, ademas de que, como en un foro, tambien puedes poner tu pregunta tecnica, pero a diferencia del foro, te contesta un tecnico que sabe de que esta hablando.
Yo mismo aplique en una ocasion para ser un tecnico dentro del sitio. Pase la prueba, te hacen un pequeño examen tecnico y algunas preguntas muy relacionadas con el soporte a clientes, asi que para poder pasarlo, si debes de saber y tener un poco de experiencia con servicio al cliente.
Cualquier persona puede utilizar este portal, tal vez no sea tan "amigable" la interfaz, pero es facil de utilizar.

Problemas de calibracion de monitor - Mac

Problema:
De un momento para otro, el perfil de calibracion del monitor de una computadora MAC se regresa al default, haciendo que las imagenes se vean muy palidas, el color se vaya demasiado hacia el blanco y la pantalla en general se ve muy brillante.

Al momento de tratar de cargar otra vez el perfil de calibracion del monitor desde SYSTEM PREFERENCES / DISPLAYS / COLOR, aparece un mensaje referente a que el perfil esta corrupto. No es posible restaurar la calibracion que tenemos guardada. A pesar de que aparece en la lista de PERFILES, no es posible reajustarla. Reiniciar tampoco soluciona el problema.

Solucion:

Los perfiles no se han perdido, simplemente el OS no los carga. Sin embargo es posible restaurar los perfiles con la simple ejecucion del archivo donde MacOS los guarda. Estan localizados en la siguiente ruta en el disco duro (donde tengan instalado el OS):

"/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/
Versions/A/Frameworks/CoreGraphics.framework/Versions/A/
Resources/DMProxy"

El archivo en cuestion es el DMProxy. Basta con ejecutarlo (hacerle doble click) y listo, las calibraciones que teniamos guardadas estaran ya disponibles y todo vuelve a la normalidad. De hecho, el ultimo perfil de calibracion utilizado sera el que se aplicara en el momento de ejecutar la aplicacion.
Les recomiendo guarden UNA COPIA de este archivo (no lo muevan de su lugar original) en algun lugar donde les sea facil recordar la ruta, porque si es un rollo acordarse de donde se localiza el archivo original. Funciona igual.
